3.7.13 was opening night for Brooklyn Bowl’s Bowlive IV ~ 8 nights with Soulive and special guests (March 7-9, 12-16)  Kung Fu kicked off the evening and certainly did a great job of getting everybody in the mood as the bowl filled up quickly.  It was a nasty night out, weather wise, and it was time to get warmed up!

It was great to see so many familiar faces, and when Soulive kicked in you could really feel the energy in the room!

John Popper of Blues Traveler joined the band for a couple of songs, including Mulling it Over, which I was happy to hear!

The highlight of the evening came for me when Luther Dickinson joined the stage toward the end of the second set.  Luther is a true talent and it was so great to hear him with these guys!  It was incredible to hear their guitars sing during their cover of The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

Finally Cody made an appearance, sporting a new haircut and some new sort of drum machine…

Yet another great night at Brooklyn Bowl! If you have a chance to see one of the Bowlive nights, I would suggest that you do…  You never know what might pop out from behind the bowling alley… (see link below)

Last night was my second show this year of the Allmans’ 11 night run at the Beacon Theater.  This is a time of year that I always look forward to for the last 15 years or so, rarely has a year gone by that I have missed these shows.  Last night was extra special…

The Blind Boys of Alabama joined them on stage last night with Peter Levin on keys for House of the Rising Sun/ Amazing Grace and Ben Harper’s “There Will Be a Light”.

I managed to hold still long enough (sort of…) to get a little video of Amazing Grace.

For me, the highlight of the evening came when Pete Levin joined the band on stage for The Weight with Joan Osborne and The Juke Horns and Joey Williams from The Blind Boys on guitar.  What a treat to see Pete side by side with Gregg Allman,  musical genius!

I was very honored and moved to be a guest at Levon Helm’s funeral on Friday.  An incredible day dedicated to Levon, “the coolest breeze out of Arkansas” as referred to by his longtime friend Paul Berry.  A true “musician’s musician” his light shined through in the stories told and the songs that were sung.  Garth Hudson showed his love for his friend at the piano and said it best in saying nothing at all.

I can only hope to leave such a wonderful thumbprint when I leave this earth.

No depression in heaven.

The streets of the town of Woodstock were lined with fans and friends wishing this wonderful man farewell….

I wish I knew how it would feel to be free
I wish I could break all the chains holding me
I wish I could say all the things that I should say
Say ‘em loud, say ‘em clear
For the whole round world to hear

Levon was such an incredible musician, a true lover of the music itself.  Every time I saw him, no matter where or what the situation, he always had a way of making me feel so at home with him.  His warmth and love was tangible.  I spent a number of evenings in his home in Woodstock, and every time felt nothing short of the greatness that he emanated. From his stage in the “barn” to sitting at his kitchen table, his smile filled the room and could warm hearts on the coldest  of nights.

One of my absolute favorite moments in my musical life was hearing him call  Peter Levin’s  name from the stage to have him  join him and the band for The Weight… An incredibly amazing moment that I will cherish forever.

I am so blessed to have had a glimpse and will remember him always.  I am so grateful to have had some of my most wonderful memories in the presence of this beautiful man, what a blessing to have his music.  May he rest in peace.

RIP Levon
